Behind the Scenes - Meet Patrick Cierpka

What does light mean to you?
Among other things, light is a source of inspiration for my work.

Is the light on or off when you sleep?
Off!

Where do you get your inspiration?
Over time, from an accumulation of impressions and experiences, from everyday life and from special moments.

What do you usually do when you are bored?
I very rarely am, I think I sleep. Or I start painting.

What do you do first thing in the morning?
6:40, I turn off the alarm clock.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
My superpower would be getting oil paint to dry in a few minutes.

What motivates you to create?
The freedom to create something according to my own ideas. And boredom.

What is your favourite smell?
Vanilla, sausage with mustard and the smell of sea air.

What is the most interesting thing a critic or collector has ever said about your artwork?
That my paintings transport him to very specific moments and places in his life.

What is the funniest/craziest thing a visitor has ever done with one of your works?
I am not aware of any funny/crazy events. Once I saw dancing in front of a work of mine,

What's the best joke you tell at openings?
I have never done that.

Do you listen to music when you work? And what influence does that have on your work?
Yes, I often listen to music in the studio. Since music has an influence on my mood, it also has an influence on my work.

What should never be missing in your fridge?
Milk, butter and eggs.

What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always wanted to be an artist... hahaha, no of course a professional footballer.

Beer or wine? Coffee or tea?
Wine. Tea.

What profession would you do if you weren't an artist?
I don't know, probably none.

Which person, dead or alive, would you like to talk to and about what?
With my grandfather - who also painted - about his and my paintings.

If you were an animal, what would it be?
Maybe a mandarin duck - great colours, a picture on 2 legs!

Which school subject did you like the most, which one did you hate the most?
Sport and art, I found chemistry rather difficult.

Do you sing in the shower?
Rarely.

Which app on your smartphone has the most screen time?
Probably the Instagram app.

What question do you wish we had asked you?
Do you take shampoo and shower gel from hotel rooms?

If you were only allowed to paint with one colour, what would it be?
Then I wouldn't want to paint any more.
